Ballerina (marketed as From the World of John Wick: Ballerina) is a 2025 American action thriller film directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten. It is the fifth installment in the John Wick franchise and it takes place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and before the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).[7] It stars Ana de Armas, Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick (in his final screen appearance), Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves. In the film, ballerina-turned-assassin Eve Macarro (de Armas) takes on an army of killers as she seeks revenge against those responsible for the death of her father
Lionsgate acquired Hatten's spec script for the spin-off film in 2017, leading to him contributing to the final script for Parabellum and serving as the lead writer for Chapter 4. In October 2019, Wiseman was hired as director; Chad Stahelski, who had directed the previous John Wick films, was confirmed as a producer by May 2020. Ballerina was officially announced in April 2022, with de Armas confirmed as the lead. Principal photography occurred from November 2022 to January 2023 in Prague; additional action sequences were shot starting in February 2024.
Ballerina was released in the United States on June 6, 2025. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, and grossed over $95 million worldwide.
Plot
Eve Macarro is the daughter of two assassins: Javier of the Ruska Roma and his Cultist wife. At a young age, Eve was taken away from the Cult by Javier, which led to the death of Eve's mother. As the Cult's Chancellor seeks to retrieve Eve, they assault her residence, killing her guards and fatally wounding Javier, who helps her escape. New York Continental owner Winston Scott brings Eve to the Ruska Roma, where she meets their Director and agrees to join them.
Over the next 12 years, Eve trains as a ballerina and an assassin/bodyguard under the Director and Nogi. At one point, she encounters John Wick, who was visiting the Director to ask for safe passage to Casablanca.[c] John advises Eve to abandon her violent path, though unsuccessful. Eve graduates from the program after killing a fellow Ruska Roma assassin, who is implied to have failed in her duties. Eve then successfully protects her first ward, heiress Katla Park. Two months later, after completing a contract, Eve is attacked by an assassin, whom she kills and identifies as a Cultist. She asks the Director about the Cult, seeking revenge. The Director forbids Eve from pursuing the Cult due to a longstanding truce between the Cult and the Ruska Roma.
Eve disobeys the Director and visits the New York Continental, where Charon grants her a meeting with Winston. Winston reveals that one Cultist, Daniel Pine, is staying at the Prague Continental with a large bounty on him, so Eve travels there and books a room. Eve infiltrates Pine's room, discovering his daughter Ella, whom Pine reveals he is hiding from the Cult, having escaped from them. As several Cultists stationed at the hotel observe Eve and Pine, their leader Lena increases Pine's bounty. The Cultists and other mercenaries attack Pine on Continental grounds. Pine entrusts Ella to Eve, promising to give her information on the Cult later. As they exit the Continental, Cultist Dex shoots Pine, while Lena incapacitates Eve and kidnaps Ella. The Prague Continental staff spare Eve and execute two captured Cultists/mercenaries for their attack.
Eve goes to purchase weapons from arms dealer Frank, but the Cult attacks his shop. After Eve kills the Cultists, Frank helps her narrow down the location of the Cult's base and provides her with transport. Eve's search leads to the town of Hallstatt, where she quickly comes under attack by its people, who are all assassins working for the Cult. Eve is eventually captured and brought to the Chancellor, who discovers her Ruska Roma affiliation. Eve reveals her revenge plot, while he reveals that Pine is his son and Ella his granddaughter. The Chancellor remembers Eve, informing Lena that she is Eve's older sister. Eve breaks free before being cornered by Lena, who reveals their kinship. Lena says Javier abandoned her during his escape due to fearing that the Cult had already indoctrinated her. Hearing of Eve and Lena talking, the Chancellor orders their deaths; Lena is killed by the Cult's grenades while Eve escapes.
The Chancellor calls the Director to declare war between their factions due to Eve's actions, despite the Director sharing that Eve had gone rogue. To appease the Chancellor, the Director sends John Wick to eliminate Eve as a compromise, which the Chancellor accepts. John arrives at Hallstatt, where he finds and defeats Eve, repeatedly sparing her and imploring her to abandon her pursuit. Eve pleads for her revenge, prompting a sympathetic John to give her less than thirty minutes to kill the Chancellor, after which he will continue his contract.
Eve continues fighting against the Cult across Hallstatt, with John assisting her from a distance. When the Cult loses track of John, the Chancellor attempts to flee with Ella, but Eve corners them. The Chancellor attempts to reason with Eve, but she executes him and rescues Ella. John informs the Director of the Chancellor's death.
Ella is reunited with a recovering Pine at the New York Continental where Eve seeks refuge. The Cult places a large bounty on Eve. While watching former Kikimora trainee Tatiana's ballet performance, Eve learns of the bounty and leaves the theater.

Struggling doorknob salesman Steve breaks into a mine to fulfill a childhood dream, where he discovers the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal. He discovers that when combined, they create a portal that transports him to the Overworld, a world where the terrain is made of easily manipulated cubes. He builds his own paradise and later stumbles across a portal to a hellish world called the Nether. He is imprisoned by Malgosha, the gold-obsessed piglin ruler of the Nether who gravely discourages creativity. Because the Orb would allow her to control the Overworld, Steve has his dog Dennis escape with the Orb and Crystal and hide them under his bed in the real world.
Sometime later, 1980s video game champion Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison owns a failing video game store in Chuglass, Idaho. He heads to a storage auction to acquire items to sell for cash, ultimately winning the contents of Steve's old house. While searching through the items, particularly hoping to find an Atari Cosmos, he instead finds Steve's old belongings, including the Orb and Crystal.
Siblings Henry and Natalie move to Chuglass following their mother's death. The two meet Dawn, their real estate agent who also runs a mobile petting zoo. On Henry's first day of school, he gets in trouble when his experimental jetpack is sabotaged and damages the nearby potato chip factory. To avoid expulsion, he pays Garrett to pretend to be his uncle, who takes him to the video game store. There, Henry discovers the Orb and Crystal and combines them, leading the two to Steve's mine. Natalie finds Henry missing and calls Dawn, who tracks down Henry's location via Natalie's phone. As the four reunite, they are sucked into the portal and arrive in the Overworld. Malgosha learns that the Orb has returned and releases Steve from his imprisonment in the Nether to reclaim it, saying that she has Dennis as a hostage.
While fighting off monsters at night, Henry learns to manipulate blocks and builds a wooden fortress. The Earth Crystal is destroyed in the commotion. Steve appears at dawn and defeats the monsters; he tells the group that a replacement Crystal will be needed from the Woodland Mansion and joins them. To prepare for this quest, he leads them to a nearby village and demonstrates how to craft. Piglins seeking the Orb of Dominance launch an attack on the village; Steve, Garrett, and Henry narrowly escape, while Natalie and Dawn are separated from them and befriend Dennis. Malgosha responds by sending out the Great Hog, a massive Piglin.
Ross invites Wilson and Torres to a summit with world leaders at the White House, and Wilson accepts on the condition that Bradley is also invited. Ross asks Wilson to help him reform the Avengers. During the summit, Ross explains that a new metal, adamantium, has been discovered on "Celestial Island", which was formed when the Celestial Tiamut emerged in the Indian Ocean. The recovered items were the first refined samples of the metal and were stolen from a Japanese mining operation. To avoid an arms race, Ross proposes a treaty to govern adamantium's mining and distribution. As he is talking, the song "Mr. Blue" plays and causes several men, including Bradley, to begin shooting at Ross and other dignitaries. Apprehended by Ross's head of security, former Black Widow Ruth Bat-Seraph, the men regain their senses and deny any knowledge of the attack.
While investigating, Wilson is ambushed by Sidewinder and captures him. Torres tracks a call on Sidewinder's phone to a hidden black site in West Virginia called Camp Echo One. Ross tries to salvage the treaty, but the Japanese government blames him for the theft of their adamantium and the subsequent White House attack. Ross realizes that the mastermind behind these events is Dr. Samuel Sterns, who gained advanced intelligence after being exposed to the blood of Bruce Banner / Hulk during the Abomination's rampage through Harlem. Ross imprisoned Sterns at Camp Echo One, publicly blamed him for the Abomination's actions, and promised to release him if Sterns helped advance him to the presidency. Wilson and Torres find Sterns and learn how he uses technology and the song "Mr. Blue" to control minds. He escapes while they are fighting mind-controlled soldiers.
Ross sends Bat-Seraph to secure Camp Echo One, where she finds and helps Wilson and Torres. The trio meet with Wilson's military friend Dennis Dunphy, who has Sidewinder in custody. Wilson learns enough from Sidewinder to deduce Sterns's plan to destroy Ross's reputation. Wilson, Torres, and Bat-Seraph go to Celestial Island where Ross and Ozaki, the Prime Minister of Japan, are racing to claim ownership of adamantium. Sterns takes control of the minds of two American pilots and makes them attack the Japanese fleet. Wilson and Torres intercept the planes and convince the Japanese to stand down, but Torres is critically injured in the fight. Ross tells Wilson that he is dying of heart failure and had Sterns develop pills that have prolonged his life; Ross refused to release Sterns for fear that he would no longer make the pills, leading to Sterns's anger and plans for revenge.
